The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage is part of Flimby Primary School, which is a vibrant village school at the heart of the community. Please look at our school Facebook page for more information about the exciting things we get up to.

The children are an absolute pleasure and we have excellent, hardworking teachers who deliver engaging, fun and exciting lessons. The staff all want the very best for our children and are always willing to go the extra mile.

Our Foundation Stage team consists of Miss Pearce (EYFS Lead/Teacher) Mrs Bates (Teaching Assistant), Mrs Williams (Teaching Assistant) and Miss Maxwell (Apprentice Teaching Assistant).

We have a large classroom, with an extension that can be separated into two rooms if we need to deliver some direct teaching.

We have access to a conservatory where the children have access to paint, water and all the messy play.

We have an outside area, which we are continually developing, to move with the children’s needs and interests. We are able to access the outdoor area throughout the day, whatever the weather!

Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)Framework was updated in September 2021. The framework covers Nursery and Reception children’s learning and development from birth to 5 years.

Broadly the seven areas of our learning and development are:

The three prime areas:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

The four specific areas:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

We focus on a play based curriculum, where we encourage learning and vocabulary extension; through high quality play and modelling from the staff within the setting. We aim to ensure every child feels happy and safe and receives a high quality learning environment. We have implemented ‘Planning in the Moment’ and focus on the children’s interests instead of being topic based.

We observe and record children’s learning and development and have introduced a ‘Focus Child Approach’. These observations are shared with you at the end of the Focus Child week.

We also use an app called SeeSaw. This is where activities can be set for your child to complete at home. This allows you to add photos, videos etc that you and your child have been up to at home.

White polo shirts, grey or black skirts / dresses / trousers and royal blue sweatshirt / cardigan.

In the Summer dresses and shorts.

Sensible black shoes – we would suggest shoes with Velcro not laces.

We recommend a water bottle – to contain water, not juice.

A book bag – a great way of taking home important information or things they may have made.

Wellington boots- we have continuous access to the outdoor provision, where the children will be able to explore in the water and sand. We would like them to please bring in a pair of wellington boots so they don’t get their school shoes wet.

Spare clothes – just in case of accidents either toileting or just getting wet in the water tray. These will be stored on your child’s peg.

Always bring a coat!

NO jewellery – only studs allowed

Names in EVERYTHING – we cannot stress this point enough even shoes!

Nursery children DO NOT need a PE kit as they will not be getting changed.

You will be provided with a uniform order form in your pack.

Nursery children are entitled to 15 hours free childcare a week. The Nursery hours are from 8:45am – 11:45am. We offer 30-hour free childcare provision 8:45am – 3:15pm.

The Foundation door will open at 8:45am. When a member of the Foundation Stage Team will welcome the children into the classroom when the bell rings. The children will find their peg and hang up their belongings.

When your child comes into the classroom, they will find their name, picture on the door, and place it on the 10 frame (there will be a teacher there to help).

Arrivals after the door has closed will enter the main office and sign children in.

We have a weekly special snack, that relate to different celebrations, seasons and children’s likes and interests. The children are involved with choosing, preparing and tidying away.

We also have a cookery area in the classroom, where the children can independently make cakes. We have recently introduced cereal dispensers for the children to independently access.
